‘They do give cause for reflection while you are waiting for the lights to change.’
The Dutch city of Utrecht has become the first in the Netherlands to install traffic lights showing same-sex couples.
Utrecht city council installed several sets of traffic lights, showing two women, two men and a man and a woman holding hands as they wait or walk.
This was done to show the ‘city’s acceptance of different forms of sexuality’. Utrecht was also the first Dutch city to have a rainbow zebra crossing.
Council alderman Kees Geldorf told Nos that it shows Utrecht as a ‘many-sided city’.
‘And they do give cause for reflection while you are waiting for the lights to change,’ he added.
Many other cities across Europe have installed these traffic lights, including in Vienna and Munich.
