Abbey Kiwanuka Director OPAL wins the Positive Role Model for LGBT Award at the UK National Diversity Awards 2018

Abbey Kiwanuka Honoured at UK’s Largest Diversity Awards
Scissor Sister favourite Ana Matronic joined forces with TV presenter Brian Dowling to host the National Diversity Awards on September 8th.

Community organisations and role models from across the UK headed to the breath-taking Liverpool Anglican Cathedral on 14th September to witness the country’s 2018 winners being crowned the best of British diversity.

Abbey Kiwanuka beat seven others in the running for the Positive Role Model for the LGBT CATEGORY

Abbey has been a human rights advocate in his home country of Uganda, the UK, the Netherlands and France for fifteen years and is the founder and Director of Out & Proud African LGBTI (OPAL).

“I am thrilled to be the winner of the National Diversity Awards 2018 in the category of Positive Role Model LGBT for my advocacy of LGBT asylum rights. I did not expect it since the line-up was full of great people. My driving force is that I don’t want to see anyone go through what I went through. I have engaged the court system as an appellant and, latterly, as a scholar. This award is not for me but for my community, my supporters and my advisors –when we win, we win as one, and when we lose, we lose together. Thank you, National Diversity Awards.”
